Whoever hooks on the load and signals the driver is part of the lift, on a lorry loader at your yard gate or an excavator laying pipe. If a load drops, the first questions are who slung it and whether you can show they were trained. PHW assesses your slingers and signallers on your own site and machines.

All types of lift and all slinging and signalling duties, whichever machine does the lifting.
PHW assesses the people who sling and signal for you, on your own site and machines. The slinger and signaller does not drive the machine. They check the load and the slings, chains or shackles, attach the load, agree the signals with the machine operator and direct the lift by those signals. Many sites call this person the banksman or ground man.
Theory and practical assessment cover these units.
Your slinger and signaller gets certificates to show on site. You get the records for your file. Anyone can scan the QR code on a certificate to open the live record.
The duty to train sits with you as the employer, under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 section 2(2)(c) and PUWER 1998 regulation 9. Regulation 13 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires you to take each person's capabilities into account when you give them a task.
LOLER 1998 applies. Regulation 8 requires every lifting operation to be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out in a safe manner. Regulation 9 requires lifting accessories, such as slings and shackles, to be thoroughly examined at least every 6 months, or under an examination scheme, where they are exposed to conditions that cause deterioration. HSE's Approved Code of Practice and guidance L113, Safe use of lifting equipment, explains how to comply.
You decide who is authorised to sling and signal on your site. PUWER 1998 regulation 9 requires you to make sure everyone who uses work equipment has received adequate training for health and safety. The certificate, unit credit, records and site evidence statement are the evidence you keep on file for that decision.
Up to four of your people assessed for competence in one day, on your own site and machines, with minimum downtime. Plus a written safe-system pack for each topic.
Tell us how many people sling and signal for you, what you lift with and the site postcode, and PHW comes back with dates. PHW works nationally.
PHW has certificated thousands of candidates nationwide, for multinationals and small firms alike.
