An employee was assisting in repairing a broken lifting mechanism on a tipper truck body when a one-tonne JCB bucket being used to prop up the raised body became dislodged. The bucket, which lacked a quick hitch or retaining pin, fell onto the worker.
Injuries: Multiple fractures to the hand, shoulder blade, ribs, shin and thigh, a crushed ankle and foot, and a subsequent pulmonary blood clot.
Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
“Employers must not underestimate the risks involved and must ensure that appropriate equipment and systems of work are used when undertaking such work.”
A raised vehicle body must only be supported with equipment designed and secured for that purpose, never an improvised prop.
