Reach truck refresher training

A reach truck working your racking, drivers who say they have done it for years, and nothing on file to show who has been assessed on this truck with people on foot in the aisle. PHW refreshes and assesses your drivers on your own reach truck, on your own site, and leaves you the records.

Scope

A refresher for drivers who already work a reach truck.

What this course is

A refresher for reach truck drivers who already work the truck. PHW checks each driver's competence on your own reach truck, renews it, and gives you the certificate and records for your file.

Who it is for

A driver who joined you with experience and nothing on file, an agency driver you have kept on, someone trained years ago by a provider you cannot trace, or a driver involved in a near miss or a rack strike. Each one is assessed on your truck in your racking, so you know where they stand.

Taking on someone who has never driven a reach truck? Say so in the message box on the quote form and PHW will tell you what fits.

What is assessed

PHW refreshes and assesses each driver on your own reach truck, on your own site, in your own racking: a theory test, then a practical assessment on the truck they drive.

Each result is recorded as it happens, so what you receive matches what the driver did.

What the operator and the employer receive

  1. Certificate for the refresher
  2. Theory test record
  3. Practical assessment record
  4. Site evidence statement for site management
  5. Live verification page
  6. QR code on the certificate, resolving straight to that page

The legal position

If a reach truck drops a pallet from height or strikes someone in an aisle, you will be asked for that driver's training and assessment record. The duty to train sits with you as the employer, under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 section 2(2)(c) and PUWER 1998 regulation 9.

HSE's L117, rider-operated lift trucks, covers reach trucks and sets out training in three stages: basic training, job-specific training and familiarisation with the particular truck and site.

The distinctive risk sits in racking aisles, with high lifts and reach mechanisms, where the truck works with the mast extended close to pedestrians; where it is used for lifting, LOLER 1998 also applies.

Your sign-off

Once a driver has completed basic, job-specific and familiarisation training, HSE guidance in L117 says you should give them written authorisation to operate the trucks they have been trained to use: their name, the date, the types of truck and any conditions. The certificate, the theory and practical records and the site evidence statement are the evidence you keep on file when you sign it.
