An employee was injured when an approximately 800kg pre-cast web section of a wind turbine blade collapsed after support poles, which had been holding the structure in place, were removed during construction work. The company had failed to adequately assess the risks and to devise and implement a robust safe system of work to prevent employees from removing the support poles.
Injuries: Left paralysed from the waist down.

Support poles holding large structural components should be locked in place and only released by a nominated person once the relevant stage of the build is complete.
