A worker was cleaning a sausage roll production line at the company's Sheerness, Kent site when her arm passed through an unguarded conveyor roller that began operating while she was cleaning it. The roller lacked adequate guarding to prevent contact during cleaning.
Injuries: Multiple fractures, including a broken arm.
Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
“Too many workers are seriously injured every year as a result of contact with dangerous parts of machinery due to inadequate or absent guarding.”
Conveyor rollers and other dangerous moving parts must be guarded, or the machine isolated, before any cleaning takes place while running is possible.
