A worker was laying vinyl bathroom flooring when a pressurised glue canister hose became damaged and released a large quantity of dichloromethane adhesive into a poorly ventilated bathroom. He lost consciousness and collapsed after inhaling the toxic vapours.

DCM-based adhesives should be avoided wherever a safer alternative is reasonably practicable, and only used in well-ventilated areas (not bathrooms, cellars or stairwells); in this case HSE calculated the exposure limit would have been reached within seconds.
