For new starters, labourers, apprentices and anyone about to go onto a construction site for the first time. A day of straight, plain-language training and a written workbook that shows what the learner actually understood, marked by the assessor and backed by a PHW certificate.

Anyone starting out on a construction site, whichever trade they end up working in.
New starters, labourers and apprentices who have never worked on a construction site before, and anyone an employer wants to give a grounding in construction site health and safety before their first day on site. No prior knowledge is assumed.
Mapped to the five learning outcomes of the national Level 1 standard.
The principles of risk assessment: spotting hazards, working out who could be harmed and how, and the basic steps that reduce a risk before work starts.
Safe manual handling: why lifting and carrying incorrectly causes lasting injury, and how to lift, carry and move materials the right way.
Working safely at height: why falls are a leading cause of death on site, and the basic precautions that keep work at height safe.
Health risks on a construction site: dust, noise, vibration, hazardous substances and the everyday exposures that damage health over time rather than all at once.
Working safely around plant and equipment: keeping clear of moving machinery, and why only trained, authorised people operate it.
One day, on site or remotely.
The course runs as one day, either delivered on your own site or remotely. The learner works through a written workbook covering the five areas above and completes it themselves. The assessor marks the completed workbook. Once it passes, PHW issues a certificate carrying a QR code that resolves to a live verification page, so anyone can check it is genuine.
This is PHW's own course, mapped to the national Level 1 standard. If you need a CSCS Green Labourer card, you will also need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test and a regulated Level 1 award from a recognised awarding body. We will tell you how to arrange both.
