If your crew cut kerbs, block paving or slabs with a Stihl saw, or cut steel, cladding or guttering with an angle grinder, you have to make sure everyone who fits and runs a disc has been trained, and be able to show it. This pack gives your own supervisor the documents to train, test, authorise and record them. Bench grinders in workshops and fabrication shops are covered too.

On site the machines are a petrol Stihl saw cutting concrete kerbs, block paving and slabs, and an angle grinder cutting steelwork, box profile cladding sheets and guttering. A disc that is mounted, guarded or run at the wrong speed can burst in use.
The duty sits with the employer. Regulation 9 of PUWER 1998 says every employer must ensure that everyone who uses work equipment has received adequate training for health and safety. PUWER also revoked the Abrasive Wheels Regulations 1970. HSE guidance HSG17 says wheels should be mounted only by an appropriately trained person, and recommends keeping a record of that training.
Cutting concrete, block or masonry dry puts respirable crystalline silica into the air, so wet cutting and water suppression on the saw are covered. In a workshop, a badly adjusted work rest on a bench grinder is a common cause of serious hand injury. The pack also covers:
HSE guidance HSG17, Safety in the use of abrasive wheels, sets out what safe mounting and use look like.
Everything your own supervisor needs to train, test, authorise and record your people on abrasive wheels.

The theory test answer key is supplied separately, to the employer only, so your supervisor marks the test against it and the candidates never see it. That keeps the test a genuine assessment.
Available where a customer, principal contractor or insurer asks for records that someone outside your firm has checked.
You assess your own people in-house using the pack, and send PHW the completed records. PHW checks the records and, where they hold up, issues a certificate carrying a QR code that resolves to a live verification page. The certificate states that the assessment was carried out in-house and verified by PHW. Only records that hold up are certified.
Up to four of your people assessed for competence in one day, on your own site and machines, with minimum downtime. Plus a written safe-system pack for each topic.
Tell us which saws and grinders you run, how many people use them and the site postcode, and we will come back with a quote and dates.
PHW has certificated thousands of candidates nationwide, for multinationals and small firms alike.
